Girl Geeks Network
Our aim of the Girl Geeks Network is to keep the networking events neutral with no single company or entity dominating but to further develop our strategic partnerships, where everyone shares and benefits equally from the events.
We encourage all Girl Geeks to bring along literature and business cards regarding their own company and/or cause as well as details and examples of new and exciting technologies, innovations and concepts to share at each event.
Spread the word and enjoy Girl Geeks!
Industry and Trends
Women make up 51% of the UK population and 47% of those active in the labour market, but are the largest under represented group in terms of participation in enterprise and offer a wealth of untapped talent and economic opportunity. Despite some progress in recent years, the gap between male and female entrepreneurship in the UK remains stubbornly wide – men are still almost twice as likely to start businesses as women - the gap is wider still for young women.
Getting more girls and women into the technology, science and related technical sectors is today not only a gender equality issue but is also an economic necessity.
Pace of change, opportunity and working with cutting edge technology emerges as the top three most positive aspects for women working in IT.
In addition to providing an integral social business network, Girl Geeks aims to provide inspiration and support for the next generations.
Time for some role models!
Women mentor male bosses as Dell joins push to smash glass ceiling
The Observer, Sunday 11 October 2009
Senior male workers at the computer company Dell are being mentored by female colleagues in a pioneering move aimed at highlighting the problems women face in the workplace and helping them get into the top jobs.
Women in middle-management roles have been mentoring some of the company's most senior men to give them an insight into female perceptions of the world of work and the daily challenges women face, such as childcare arrangements.
"Women get to a certain point in their careers when they have to juggle both home and work life and there's a lot of extra pressure on them," said a spokesperson at Dell.
The mentoring scheme is part of a wider project by Dell designed to get more women into the top positions in the IT sector.
What is Girl Geeks?

Girl Geek: Someone who is female and has an interest in technology, particularly innovation, computing and new media. Not necessarily technically minded.
Girl Geeks (North East) has incorporated Durham Girl Geeks Dinners to create a strong geographical network and organise monthly events for our members across the entire North East England region. Members travel from as far as Richmond, North Yorkshire in the south, Cumbria to the west and Northumberland to the north of the region.
The events are great fun and provide a welcoming atmosphere for women to talk about technology, science, innovation or business in an informal environment. There will be an inspirational speaker who talks for a short while on a chosen subject and/or a demonstration of a latest innovation in technology for the event.
Girl Geeks is for the girls! But it doesn't mean that men can't attend, they just have to come as the guest of a female.
Girl Geeks is focused on finding real solutions to the long-standing diversity imbalance problems of how to attract, retain and advance more women in the technology, science, digital and related industries through employment and entrepreneurialism.
- Females account for around one in every five IT professionals and across SET (science, engineering and technology) occupations there are four males to everyone female
- Female IT professionals working full time, earn on average 13% less than male IT professionals
- A gender imbalance is prevalent across the majority of A-Level STEM subjects
INSPIRATION - RECOGNITION - MOTIVATION - EDUCATION - INNOVATION
